Biker versus Motorcycle Enthusiast
Bikers are motorcycling enthusiasts who desire something more than just a relaxing ride around the countryside on a Sunday morning and a stop for breakfast at a popular diner. In the motorcycle riding community folk who have an aversion to clubs are termed “Civilians”. They do their own thing and are only committed to themselves. They ride by their own rules, do not associate themselves with clubs and are in essence non conformists. This does not mean they have no respect for other motorcyclists. Bikers in the true sense of the term, desire to be part of a specific group who share a unique code and build trust for one another in a close relationship.
If you classify yourself as a Biker read further! If not read on anyway!
After some sort of research, be it through friends, the internet, magazines or other means, a would-be Biker approaches a motorcycle club to apply for membership. We ask ourselves the question, what attracts people to a specific club? There are so many out there. The answer is simple, personal preference. We are not forced to join a club, we scrutinize the club constitution, its locality in relation to where we stay, colours, fees, general internal culture and most important, the other club members, before we make that decision.
Each of us, being individuals with a very specific psychology, is attracted to clubs for very different reasons. It could be because we are lonely and find acceptance in a particular group, or we have a particular need to associate and join a group where that need can be fulfilled, or we are trying to escape from the bonds of a formal bureaucratic system which limits freedom and we need to break free once in a while. Whatever the need, the basis for joining a Biker Club is to pursue the love for riding our motorcycle together with other like minded people in a closed context of a unique culture. Fact is, the internal value system of the club, its reputation and ability to fulfil a specific need is what is going to attract people.
All clubs offer opportunities to would-be Bikers to “ride for them”. What does this entail? Riding for a club signifies the building of a loyalty which is centred on commitment to the code of that particular club. Bikers don’t join clubs to “do their own thing”. They have to commit themselves to adhere to a code which could be embodied in written statements or underlying in the hearts of the members. No matter what patch you fly on you jacket, it is what is in your heart which counts at the end of the day. A TRUE BIKER LIVES BY A CODE!
The culture of the Club is fashioned by its leadership n.l. President, Leader, Vice President, Road Captain and Sergeant at Arms. A stable leadership who lead by example, caring for their members and nurturing new Bikers will command respect and earn the trust needed for success in a Biker Club.
What makes JoBurg Eagles MCC an excellent choice of a Biker Club to join? Our family orientated approach means that we become an extended family to our members. There is safety, comfort, acceptance, mutual respect and discipline in our ranks. Our unique code is indicative of our value system and requires a strong sense of responsibility to strive for. We advocate the importance of the family cell as a priority. Your family is important to you and must come first above all. Secondly, Biking is expensive. Your job which affords you the privilege of riding must be placed high up on the priority list. Thirdly, you need to earn the respect of your fellow club members, win their trust by attending events where you get to know each other. It is difficult being a Biker if you hardly ever ride with the club. Lastly, breaking away from the hum-drum of life’s routine in the form of social events is a must for Bikers. The term used is Joling. If you can maintain a healthy balance between the above four important aspects you will be termed a dedicated Biker, and of course be worthy of riding for us and flying our colours.
One of the exaggerated misnomers is that Joling and alcohol abuse is synonymous. Fact is alcohol abuse is a human choice. However, JoBurg Eagles although very high on the social/ Joling scene, will not tolerate any misbehaviour of its members under any circumstances. If you wear our colours you adhere to our code. If you cannot exercise self control membership can be suspended. The good reputation of the Club is directly influenced by the character and behaviour of its members. For this reason the Sergeant at Arms of the club is the appointed disciplinarian tasked with ensuring that the expected standards are maintained. Trust us, we have fun, and a lot of it, but not at the expense of our families, fellow club members or other club members.
A last word on the relationship between Bikers. You do not need to like all Bikers just respect them for who they are. The essence of a Biker is his love for biking, his respect of people in the community, especially the fairer sex, his loyalty for his Club and his integrity.
Join us, your life will never be the same again.
